Events certainly dampened the celebrations. As the day approached, I asked myself: Is the country worth saving? I believe it is. I then asked: Can we save it? TBD.
Thanks to the fascist Good Ole Piranhas and their fanatic followers, from shameless bigots, haters, and racists to far-right Christian terrorists (the two groups intersect, of course), attacking our institutions and rights, we’re certainly in for the long haul. On the federal level, SCOTUS, the Senate, and maybe the House will soon be in their hands; and at the state and local level, fifty percent of the states are suffering from their chokehold as well. That’s why I also ask myself: Is it time for another Civil War where the forces of logic and reason quarantine all the crazies in the Fascist States of America?
For just the attack on rights, it’s a desperate situation. Reproductive rights for women, LGBTQ rights, voting rights, the right to be free from gun violence…the list goes on and on. The descent into the cesspool of fascism is a slow, painful one, but it seems relentless. It’s f&^%ing depressing!
Lets consider freedom from gun violence because it’s in the news once again. Reasonable gun control in this country is in the toilet thanks to the Good Ole Piranhas and their far-right fascist followers and funders, the NRA. Stupid asses like governors Abbot and DeSantis and all the other gun addicts might say that no one could have stopped the massacre in Highland Park, a northern Illinois town not far from Northwestern University (in Evanston, where many victims were sent). My answer to these fascist gun-nuts is a resounding, “Yes, there is something that could halt it!” However he obtained it, the shooter there used a “high-powered rifle.” (Turns out the father vouched for the pscychotic son because he wasn’t yet twenty-one, and in that voucher he takes responsibility. Ergo, the father should be charged.) Hearing how rapid the shots were fired, that phrase is a weak euphemism: The gun was at least a semi-automatic rifle, spitting out death as fast as the gunman could pull the trigger.
So, the solution is simple: Ban the manufacture and sell of these military-style weapons! Period! They’re designed to be used on the battlefield. Spectators on a July 4th parade route ARE NOT military targets!
Until we do this, these massacres will increase in frequency and victims. Remember Steve Scalise? Even the fascist Good Ole Piranhas should want reasonable gun control! Otherwise, their lust for firearms supposedly supported by their incorrect interpretation of the Second Amendment can come back to bite them.
I’ve also heard rebuttals from fascist gun-nuts who say, “Look, what happened in Denmark!” They’re so ignorant and stupid they miss the point, or they ignore the evidence: Danes were surprised that they had such an incident so like those occurring so often in the uncivilized US. For every 100 Danes, there are only 10 guns; for every 100 Americans, there are 120. Those numbers say it all! Instead of SCOTUS and Congress pushing their debunked theory of gun rights (the Second Amendment does NOT guarantee them), they should be moving the country towards Denmark, not the wild, wild west of the Clancy and Earp brothers. As long as the fascists are in control, though, innocent people will die in US gun massacres.
