It seems ages ago, but I was impressed by a Ukrainian parliamentarian interviewed on CNN who reminded me how the US went back on its word. Here’s the historical context: When the USSR collapsed at the end of the twentieth century, Ukraine was loaded with Russian nukes. Both the UK, the US, and Russia promised they would protect Ukraine if they gave up those nukes. Some protection, right? Russia declared war on Ukraine instead of protecting them, and neither the UK nor the US has protected them. Biden et al just whine that they’re not in NATO, so they can’t protect them. In other words, the US didn’t keep its word!
Do you think Putin would have invaded Ukraine if he thought Zelenskyy would send a nuke down his gullet? That nuclear deterrent would have stopped Putin cold, as it would if the US, unilaterally or with NATO, created a no-fly zone or even moved troops in to protect Ukraine. Moreover, all the aid, humanitarian and military, is too little and too late. And Putin, whose armies are ineffectual, will either nuke Kyiv and Ukraine’s other major cities or use biological and chemical weapons in his desperation, figuring that Biden won’t do anything and the Ukrainians can’t.
There are far too many cases where the US hasn’t kept its word. Gutless leaders act more like Chamberlain than Churchill. I can see a bleak future where the US has no friends left, a future where the rest of the world is a dystopian one under fascism…and maybe the US as well.
The US is using Ukraine’s lack of NATO membership as an excuse and has forgotten all about its promise to protect Ukraine. What would the US do if Russia invaded Finland or Sweden. They’re not NATO countries! The US’s sins just keep coming.
The ex-Ukrainian president, the one before Zelenskyy, both of them likely to become martyrs, gave a warning on CNN: “Don’t trust Putin.” He should have added, “And don’t trust the US or NATO. Don’t trust Biden!” Both statements are true and valid warnings to the rest of the free world.
